Innovation isn’t about generating new ideas (that’s called Invention), it’s about taking ideas that already exist and figuring out how to apply them in ways that support constant change.
The Information Product Canvas, like all great ideas, didn’t emerge in isolation. It stands on the shoulders of giants, pioneers in data, analytics, agile, and product thinking, who have shaped how agile data teams can work today.
From the Business Model Canvas, which inspired this pattern for capturing data requirements, to the principles of Agile and Lean that enable faster iteration, to the wisdom of data leaders who have tackled these challenges before me, this book is a continuation of their work.
To reach the heights we aspire to, we must recognise the shoulders we stand on.
STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS
Over the last decade, I’ve continuously experimented with combining agile, product, and data patterns. But I haven’t invented much, if anything.
My skill lies in recognising patterns in the work of others and working alongside data teams to explore how these ideas can make their ways of working better. Then, through iteration, I refine and articulate these patterns so that they can be taught, coached, and embedded into data teams.
This book, is nothing if not a different retelling of ideas that have been written before. I have taken concepts that have been invented, innovated, and implemented outside the data domain and adapted them for success within it. I am not the first to take this approach, and I won’t be the last.
By learning from the best, we move forward faster. The books and websites in this list aren’t just references, they are the foundation upon which you can build new ways of working. I hope they help refine your craft, challenge your assumptions, and inspire you to push the boundaries of what’s possible in your data team’s way of working.
To reach the heights we aspire to, we must recognise the shoulders we stand on.
